Dr GPT

After checking in at reception at the doctors I noticed a sign advising that AI transcription and summarising might be used during my appointment. Finally, I thought, real world application of generative AI being used for something of value. I've been waiting for AI to start making a difference in diagnosis, administration, or anything else that might help a limited pool of human beings provide medical care for 8 billion plus people.

The software did two things, one was transcribe our conversation, and the other was to summarise it. The doctor let me review the output at the end and it was pretty good. I don't know which part of the process differentiates between different speakers. When the doctor warned me the steroid's side effects might make me feel "a little Kanye" it was able to understand this in medical context.

"This will save me five minutes of typing per patient," the doctor told me. Well, the appointment was still only ten minutes and the price went up since last time, so I think all that value might be going back to the software vendors. But it's a start.
